Copenhagen, Denmark

My grandma always told me that if I ever get into trouble I should run away to Copenhagen. I never understood why until now but she was definitely right. This is the land of blonde hair and blue eyes. My Great Grandfather worked for the Royal Guard of Denmark in Copenhagen. While I was there I saw men in the same uniforms that he once wore. It was amazing to think about how he once marched the streets that I was exploring. This is why I went abroad! I love the fact that I could be stepping in the same spots as my ancestors. I saw so many beautiful things and places in Copenhagen. Every corner was filled with stands selling  flowers and produce, even through it was freezing somehow everything looked so vibrant and fresh. I went to the Museum of Design which showcased how precise Scandinavian architecture and design really is. Geometrically the entire museum between the walls, ceilings and everything in between was perfect. As we continued through the city we came across an area called as Nyhavn that is known for its brightly colors houses and canals that are filled with sail boats. Along the coast of the harbor is a public space known as Ofelia Plads that was currently holding a sculpture known as “The Wave”. It is a series of triangles all the same size lined up horizontally; giving the appearance as if the triangles are getting smaller. It looks like a contraption from the future (my version of time travel). Now we get to the part that my family members probably would have advised me against but I did anyways (it was for the experience, ;/ sorry). There is self proclaimed anarchist district in Copenhagen known as Christiania. The social experiment is a community of around 1000 people formed in the former military barracks of the city. The district is very controversial because it is home to many people who sell soft drugs like marijuana and in Denmark this is not legal. Yes, I know it sounds bad, but the city is also home to extremely creative artists! However, cell phones and pictures are not allowed while in the town so I was only able to capture one picture outside of the gates. To end my trip I went to an amusement park called Tivoli. It was themed like a winter wonderland which was perfect for the below zero temperature. My friends and I rode every every ride in the park and stayed for as long as we could until it closed. The whole time I was thinking how much my little brother would have loved it. I am so happy that I got to visit a place where my Great Grandpa was so proud to be from. Little by little I am discovering,  seeing and learning about the places that I descended from. We will see what comes next!

Hi Jess, My grandfather would tell me that I reminded him of the girls he knew from the old country since I had blonde hair and green eyes. So basically you blend in when your in Denmark but in Milan have the opposite effect as the American girl. Keep your travel guide skills sharpened because we’ll be there soon. Love you, Mom.
