City of 100 Spires, Prague, Czech Republic

Last weekend I took a quick trip to Prague to visit one of my best friends, Anna, who is studying abroad there. Prague is known as the City of a Hundred Spires because of its skyline filled with gothic style cathedrals. Pastel colored brownstones that face the canals gives the city the feeling as if it is fake like a fairytale. During my visit some of the first things that I saw were Easter markets. Vendors in decorated booths lined up the square of the old town to sell their traditional foods and products. Here I was able to try some classic Czech food, which was interesting and also very expensive. This market was a huge tourist trap but was definitely worth the money. I also made a trip to the castle that is so massive that it can be seen from any point. From the front of the castle there is a ledge that overlooks the landscape of Prague. From the Castle we made our way down the hills of cobblestone streets and to the Charles Bridge. The bridge is home to many statues that line the outsides and are decorated with gold. It is good luck to rub the gold on the statue, and of course I made sure the one that I touched was the golden emblem of a dog. Something that the city is well known for is the John Lennon Wall. This wall represents a new era and revolution, and at one point was a symbol of remembrance and hope for the people of the city. The wall is covered with uncountable layers of artwork because anyone who desires can leave their mark on the wall. I however, did not paint on the wall but I did snag a picture! What was really great about visiting Anna, besides seeing her was that she knows all of the secret treasures of the city. She took me to a bar and just down the stairs was a hidden room that used to be a bunker during the war. The bunker had many relics and artwork from Czech people. We also went to a beer garden which was similar to the last bunker that we had been I had first heard beer garden I assumed that we would be in an actual garden, but turns out the garden part isn’t available until the weather is warmer. We still made the best of our experience, enjoying a nice lunch and thinking about what might have gone on in that bunker before we had been there. Prague truly is a fairytale city and the history of the city shows not only through the colors but also the attitudes of the locals.
